What we collect
Three kinds of thing:
- Your account. An email address, and payment details handled by our payment processor — we never see or store your full card number.
- The material you give us. Recordings, transcripts, photographs, written memories, documents, and anything contributors add. This is the book.
- Ordinary technical records. Log data such as IP address, browser, and timestamps, kept so the service works and stays secure.
What we use it for
To make your book, and nothing else. That means transcribing recordings, drafting and editing chapters, arranging photographs, printing and posting the finished copy, and emailing you and your contributors about the work in progress.
We do not sell your material. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not share it with anyone outside the people and services described below.
Training
Your material is never used to train AI models — not ours, and not our providers'. The models we use to transcribe and draft are used under terms that prohibit training on the content we send them.
How it is protected
Material is encrypted in transit and encrypted at rest, with each account's content protected by its own key. Access is limited to the people working on your book and to the services listed below, each of which sees only the part it needs.
Who else touches it
Oshin is a small team, so some of the work runs on established providers acting on our instructions and bound to confidentiality. By category:
- Cloud hosting, database, and authentication
- AI models used for transcription, translation, and drafting
- Payment processing
- Scheduling and, where you have agreed to it, meeting recording
- Printing, binding, and delivery of the physical book
- Email delivery
We will tell you which specific companies these are if you ask — book a call.
Contributors
When you invite family and friends to contribute, they are told what they are contributing to and who will read it. Their recordings and answers form part of the project you own. A contributor can ask us to remove their own contribution at any time; we will do it, and tell you that we have.
What you can do with it
- Export. Take a copy of the recordings, transcripts, photographs, and written material at any time.
- Correct. Everything Oshin writes is yours to change before it is printed.
- Delete. Ask us to delete your account and its material and we will, within 30 days, across our systems and backups. Deletion is permanent: we cannot recover a book once it is gone.
How long we keep it
For as long as your project is open, and afterwards for as long as you want the book kept available to you. If you stop before finishing, your material stays until you ask us to delete it. We would rather hold a family's recordings too long than delete them by surprise.
Children
Oshin is for adults. Children often appear in a family's story and may be recorded with the consent of a parent or guardian, but accounts are not for anyone under 18.
Where we are
Oshin is based in San Mateo, California, and material is processed in the United States. If you are contributing from elsewhere, your material will be handled there.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects how your material is handled, we will email you before the change takes effect rather than quietly updating this page.
Ask us anything
Book a call with us and ask. A person answers.
